Organised by the Vale Council, who will enforce the legislation in their area, the advisory sessions will cover all aspects of the new law, what businesses need to do and guidance on exemptions, etc.

A number of Council departments and external agencies will be available at each session to answer queries, and anyone interested in attending, and who has not received an invite from the Council, can contact the Smoke-Free Premises hotline on 01446 709105 to book.

The Welsh Assembly Government estimates that this piece of public health legislation will prevent more than 400 deaths annually among non-smokers in Wales from heart disease, cancer, stroke and respiratory illness.

The new legislation covers all workplaces, including health care and educational establishments, as well as factories, offices, restaurants, cinemas, leisure and shopping centres and all work vehicles and public transport vehicles, such as buses and taxis.

Operational Manager (Regulatory Services) Kate Thompson said: “As the enforcing authority for the legislation, the Council will have powers to enter premises to establish compliance with the smoke-free legislation.

“It is the Council’s intention, however, to work closely with local businesses to build compliance through advice and support.”
