The fifteenth Maltings Beer Festival

Waiting to go into the beer festival
The judging is taken very seriously

Carl Beeson, Summerskills (right) thanks Richard Wheeler, ex MD Tuckers for his support of the brewers in the South West over his many years in the industry.

The fifteenth Maltings Beer Festival, at Tuckers Maltings in Newton Abbot, was another wonderful event, we had nearly 4000 drinkers in over the 3 days consuming about 320 firkins. The standard of brewing goes up and up, with nearly 300 beers to judge on the Thursday there were none which could not be judged. After much deliberation by the judges, St Austell Tribute was a deserved Champion of the festival.

The weather was wonderful with people spilling out onto the playing field well into the evenings – the heater that we had put in the marquee was definitely redundant this year! Those on the Maltings floor were entertained by Ironic (Fri), the Belfast Busker (Sat) and Real World (Sat).

Thanks to all those brewers and CAMRA members who worked so hard to make it a success and thanks to all of you who came along and enjoyed our wares.

A mention must also be made of the help given by Tuckers Maltings – without their support, the brewing industry in the South West would not be what it is now. Richard Wheeler retired as MD of Tuckers at the end of 2006 and we acknowledged his help over the years with a presentation to him at this festival. Carl Beeson, who was chairman of SIBA South West when the Maltings Beer Festival began, presented Richard Wheeler with an engraved decanter from all of his brewing friends in the South West.

The 2008 Maltings Beer Festival dates are 24 – 26 April – we look forward to seeing you there!
