Brewers use Hogarth-esque pictures

A group of brewers has commissioned pictures based on the work of William Hogarth to publicise an anti-binge drinking campaign.

The Society of Independent Brewers (Siba) wants people to drink in pubs instead of buying cut-price alcohol from supermarkets.

It commissioned a Hereford-based artist to create ink drawings based on pictures by 18th century artist and satirist William Hogarth.

The drawings are up to date versions of the original works, Siba said.

They will be sent to MPs and made available to local pubs in a bid to publicise the dangers of binge drinking.

Siba chairman Peter Amor said: “The gin of the 18th century may have been replaced by a whole trolley of cheap drinks, but the message is the same.

“The pub is practically the only place where you can drink draught beer and people’s behaviour there is subject to strict controls by the licensee and by the presence of mature, well-behaved regular customers who wouldn’t stand for any kind of trouble.”

Siba represents more than 400 local and regional breweries, many of which own pubs
