Harviestoun Brewery is celebrating after winning two prestigious Great Taste Awards. Bitter & Twisted was awarded a one star Gold Taste Award and Old Engine Oil had the distinction of winning a two star Gold Taste Award.

Bitter & Twisted is a sharp blond beer with a fresh hop profile. It is finished by a late hopping with Styrian Goldings which gives a citrus sharpness, like a twist of lemon. Bitter & Twisted is a refreshing and drinkable beer, widely available in 500ml bottles at 4.2% ABV (RRP £2.10). It is also available in cask at 3.8%ABV.

Old Engine Oil is a strong, dark but smooth beer. Chocolate dominates the palate, nicely balanced by a hoppy bitterness. Ken Brooker, founder of Harviestoun Brewery and a former prototype designer at Ford, found the viscous nature of this beer reminded him of used motor oil, resulting in the descriptive name. Old Engine Oil is widely available in 330ml bottles at 6%ABV (RRP £1.65).

The Great Taste Awards is organised by the Guild of Fine Food and is known as the Oscars of the food industry. An award is seen an as an authoritative, independent standard for Britain’s fine food sector. This year’s judges included Alex James – farmer, journalist and bass player of Blur – Mark Hix, the chef’s chef, and national food journalist Fiona Sims.

Chris Miller, Managing Director of Harviestoun Brewery, enthuses “Our aim is to make exceptional award-winning beers that people enjoy drinking. These awards, together with all the positive feedback, give everyone at the brewery a sense of satisfaction.”

Harviestoun Brewery, based in Alva, is a wholly independent award-winning micro-brewery, regarded by many as the UK’s most innovative.
