Thorne Brewery Announces Appointment of New Head Brewer

The Thorne Brewery is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Head Brewer. Mike Richards joins from the Abbeydale Brewery in Sheffield. Over the years he took on the bulk of the brewing and recipe formulation and gained his General Certificate in Brewing from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Mike is delighted to join Thorne Brewery as Head Brewer and relishes the challenges and excitement of being part of such an exciting project from the beginning.

One of Mike’s first tasks has been designing the beers. As previosuly announced the first will be Thorne Best Bitter. This will be followed by Thorne Pale Ale (or TPA). Mike has prepared some early tasting notes for these.

Thorne Best Bitter
A classic English bitter. A range of different malts dominate the taste with caramel, chocolate and fruitcake flavours. The hops compliment this with a full bodied bitterness and notes of orange peel, pepper and herbal aromas.

Thorne Pale Ale
A crisp and refreshing pale ale. English hops give a fruity, herby flavour and a resinous, grassy aroma. Well balanced bitterness gives a clean finish.

Mike’s first official appointment will be at Doncaster Beerex, at which the Thorne Brewery will be having a stand. Doncaster Beerex is being held at the HUB (Doncaster College Building) and boasts over 90 real ales (but unfortunately not ours yet). It run from Thursday 16 April to Saturday 18 April, and is open 6pm to 11pm on Thursday and 11am to 11pm Friday and Saturday. Admission is 3.50 which includes a souvenir glass. Admission is 5 after 6pm on Friday. CAMRA members are admitted free on production of membership card.

Mike will be attending the event on Saturday between 11am and 3pm. So come along and see us.
