Campaign group says it is unacceptable pubs are “being held accountable for the actions of others”
Campaign group Justice for Licensees (JFL) has added its voice to calls for the government to drop controversial plans for a code of practice on alcohol retailing.
Inez Ward, JFL founder member, said the code – which would see a ban on various alcohol promotions – would do little to stem anti-social behaviour on the streets.
She said: “There has to be some accountability, pre-loading is apparent and in existence, this is not within the control of the pubs.
“Those who choose to binge-drink or drink to excess must be taught that this will affect their health, those who choose to break the law or act anti-socially must be held accountable for their actions as must those who choose to sell copious amounts of reduced price alcohol.
“It is unacceptable that one of the most tightly controlled industries is, once again, being held accountable for the actions of others.”
The code, which would also force pubs to introduce smaller wine measures and offer free tap water, is currently working its way through Parliament.
However the trade was given a boost last week when it emerged that the code’s implementation could be delayed until April 2011 due to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson ordering a Cabinet-wide clear-out of “anti-business” measures in the face of the recession.
