The smell of stagnating ale


Just walk down any High Street and count the number of pubs which have closed their doors, been converted into fancy eateries or earmarked to become residential gems.

The great British pub has become an endangered species, with 52 closing each week and more than 24,000 jobs lost.

The causes of this crisis are manifold. They range from the heavy discounting by grocers, the changing tastes of young consumers who prefer crowded city centre beer halls to the local and the invasion of the industry by get-rich-quick entrepreneurs.
