Two bottle beers, Pricky Back Otchan and Jem’s Stout produced by Great Newsome Brewery-based near Patrington, Hull will be proudly displaying a coveted Great Taste 2012 logo after being judged by a panel of 350 of the nation’s most discerning food experts over 45 days.
The Great Newsome Brewery a family run farm based business run by the Hodgson family, has been producing award winning cask and bottle beers for over 5 years. The brewery which produces a range of beers named after local names, dialects and characters such as Sleck Dust, Frothingham Best and Jem’s Stout supplies its beers mainly throughout Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, but also throughout the UK.
To achieve Gold in Great Taste is a significant achievement for any food or drink producer and results are eagerly awaited. The scheme, run by the Guild of Fine Food, has been described as the epicurean equivalent of the Booker Prize and in 2012 a total of 8,807 different food and drink products were entered.
“Gaining two gold star, not for one but two of our beers is quite an achievement”, said Matthew Hodgson, director of the brewery. “This is the first time that we have entered these awards and to receive two is great recognition and a pat on the back for the fantastic locally based workforce we have here”, he added.
“Great Taste Awards let our customers and potential customers know that what they are buying is a quality product and although the business is growing year on year this will inevitably help boost sales” and in mention of local area he said,” It also shows that in this quite often over looked corner of Yorkshire, we too can produce great food and drink”
Of all the entries into Great Taste 2012, only 123 gained a coveted 3-star gold, with the Top 50 from those nominated for a Golden Fork Award, the highest accolade in fine food and drink which will be announced at the Awards’ dinner at London’s Royal Garden Hotel this September.
Judges this year included Masterchef winner and restaurateur Mat Follas, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge Charles Campion, food writers Lucas Hollweg and Xanthe Clay and over 300 food buyers from leading food halls, delicatessens and farm shops, including Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason.
