Work Set To Start On Orkney Brewery Expansion

Monday, September 21st, 2009

WORK is set to get underway this week on a major ÂŁ1.2 million redevelopment of the Orkney Brewery in Sandwick.

The first phase of the project will see a new brewing plant installed at the Quoyloo site, almost doubling its current capacity. A visitor centre and special sampling room will also be created during a later phase of development.

The contract for the project has been awarded to Orkney based Casey Construction Ltd, with work expected to take around six months.

Norman Sinclair, managing director of the Orkney Brewery’s parent firm, Sinclair Breweries Ltd, said: “We’re delighted that our vision for the Orkney Brewery is about to become a reality. It’s been a great year for us, with the brewery’s Raven Ale winning the Champion Beer of Scotland award in June and Red MacGregor taking second place in the same competition. Demand for the full range of Orkney Brewery beers remains very strong and the expansion will enable us to both meet that demand and explore important new markets worldwide. The project will also greatly enhance the experience of visitors to the brewery, helping strengthen Orkney’s reputation as a unique and high quality holiday destination.”

Paddy Casey, director of Casey Construction Ltd, said: “As an Orkney firm, we’re very proud to be the preferred contractor for this important project for the County. Over the years we’ve been responsible for a number of award-winning, landmark developments - such as the Pier Arts Centre – and we work hard to maintain our reputation for excellence. The Orkney Brewery prides itself on the quality of its products and we look forward to creating a building that reflects that attention to detail.”

Orkney Brewery Secures Historic Result At Major Beer Awards

Monday, June 29th, 2009

THE Orkney Brewery has secured a historic double, taking both first and second place in the prestigious Champion Beer of Scotland competition, being held in Edinburgh today (Thursday, 25 June).

The brewery’s 3.8 per cent Raven Ale won the overall title of Champion Beer, with its 4.0 per cent Red MacGregor ale placing second. The competition forms part of the Scottish Real Ale Festival, currently underway in the capital.

Norman Sinclair, managing director of the Orkney Brewery’s parent company, Sinclair Breweries Ltd, said: “We’re absolutely overwhelmed by this result. This is the first time the brewery has taken the two top spots in this important event, so we’re ecstatic. Our beers were up against some very stiff competition and subjected to what is a rigorous judging process, but their taste and quality have shone through and done us proud.”

Mr Sinclair, who has just returned from a promotional tour of Boston and New York, added: “It’s a historic day for all of us at the company and couldn’t have come at a better time. We’ll shortly be commencing with a major expansion of the Orkney Brewery, so this success is a very nice way to celebrate the start of this latest phase in our development.”

The redevelopment of the brewery, set to begin in the autumn, will see capacity greatly increased and visitor facilities improved.

“We’ve been working tirelessly for the past three years to bring our redevelopment project to fruition and I’m delighted to report that everything is now in place,” added Mr Sinclair. “The brewery is going from strength to strength, despite these difficult economic times, and we look forward to building on today’s success and maintaining Orkney’s reputation for quality.”

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the very sudden death last week of Jonny Delap , co owner with his wife Tuggy, of Fyne Ales in Argyll, Jonny was one of the true gentleman of this world, and a larger than life character in the Scottish Brewing world, he will be sorely missed. The Fyne Ales team are all devastated by this news, but there will be a memorial service in Cairndow, Argyll and afterwards at “his” brewery for a few pints on Friday 29th May at 3.15pm to celebrate Jonny’s life, all that knew him are welcome. There will be a private family cremation, no flowers are requested, but donations to Jonny’s other passion, The Argyll Fisheries Trust, are most welcome. Rob Jenner - Fyne Ales 07856 686 688

The Inveralmond Brewery Limited, based in Perth, today announced its support for Homecoming Scotland 2009 with the launch of a new beer. Homecoming Beer will be available in cask and mini-cask from 25 January, the official launch date of the Scottish Government’s celebration of Scottish contributions to the world.

Inveralmond will offer drinkers the opportunity to try a Scottish beer which, although very definitely Scottish, takes influences from across the globe. Commenting on the launch, Inveralmond’s Managing Director, Fergus Clark, said “We believe this beer reflects the best Scotland has to offer, combining influences from across the world, bringing them home, and marrying them in our brewery in Perth, the heart of Scotland.”

There are hundreds of events planned for Homecoming Scotland 2009 up and down the country, and Clark hopes that this special beer will help those events go with a swing. “Many of the Homecoming 2009 activities will be licensed, and we would hope to make our beer available at those events whenever possible.”

The beer, brewed by Head Brewer Ken Duncan, is “a beautiful, burnished amber colour and has aromas reminiscent of forest fruits and floral spice.”. The taste is an inviting mix of biscuity malt and pleasing hops. Ken is sure the beer is worth coming home for.
