SIBA Technical Helpline – A Summary of progress

The SIBA Technical helpline was started in September 2009 and provides 20 minutes free technical advice from an expert in the field at Brewing Research International (part of the Campden BRI Group).

The service has started well. There has been a wide range of enquiries; these have included, for example, questions on:

 - how to set up a quality system to meet the requirements of supermarkets

 - giving an example of a typical HACCP plan for a brewery

 - new product development

 - problems with finings

 - problems with fermentability of wort

 - gas levels in cask beer

The Helpline can also offer advice on compliance with legislation on food and feed safety, customs and excise regulations, labelling of beers, flavour defects in raw materials, in-process or final products and microbial aspects of brewing.

If you have a technical enquiry then please use the helpline service by clicking the helpline button on the menu bar above.

SIBA TECHNICAL HELPLINE – FEQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The SIBA technical Helpline enables SIBA members to contact Campden BRI and get 20 minutes free advice from a technical expert.

We have experts in brewery processes, beer tasting, microbiology, analysis, HACCP and other disciplines to help you. The Helpline has already received a wide range of technical enquiries.

About a fifth of all enquiries are concerned with problems in the brewhouse. These include problems with liquor treatment, adjustment of pH and aeration / oxygenation of wort. A further 11% of enquiries were problems with fermentation; typically these were about yeast management, storage and repitching.

The most enquiries (23%) were about beer in cask or bottle. This included problems with finings, haze, gas content and washing of containers.

Another area of concern was HACCP (17% of enquiries) – many were from brewers who are under pressure from retailers or local authorities to implement HACCP. For these we were able to give guidance on a generic HACCP plan. Related enquiries (6%) were about compliance with supermarket requirements (such as implementing SALSA or an equivalent scheme).

Problems with effluent accounted for just 6% of enquiries but these tended to be quite urgent since they involved high levels of COD or treatment of effluent.

Other areas of concern were flavour issues and compliance with animal feed requirements.

In each case we were able to provide answers by phone or E-mail.

If you require technical help or advice then you can contact us via:

- E-mail (sibahelp@bri-advantage.com)

Siba and BRI launch brewers helpline

Don Burgess, Technical Director of SIBA has worked with Gordon Jackson of Campden BRI to develop an online helpline for small brewers which will be launching on 1 Sept 2009.

The aim of the helpline is to put professional technical advice and support at the keyboard of every SIBA member. BRI will publish a helpline email address for Siba members who can then ask their questions online, the answer will come one of BRIs research departments.

If the enquiry should need further in depth investigation, then there will be a charge payable by arrangement between the brewer and BRI. It is hoped that as the service develops, a brewers “FAQ”[Frequently Asked Questions] can be developed so that the answers to some of the more common problems identified can have a ready answer available on the internet and technical articles published in the Siba journal where it is felt that it would be useful to the membership in general.

The web based contact and help system will be reviewed regularly by SIBA and BRI to ensure that the SIBA membership is receiving the best value for money and suitably targeted advice. It is hoped by Don and Gordon to be the start of greater communication between SIBA and one of the leading brewing technical centres of excellence in the UK, and from this small beginning greater benefits to SIBA members for technical development of their businesses and their beers will result.

Going Green with SIBA and Biopac!

SIBA(Society of Independent Brewers Association) was started in the 1980’s to help emerging and small independent brewers. Now there is no limit to the size or brewery that joins. SIBA has one simple mission “To campaign on behalf of independent brewers to ensure they have the best possible opportunity to bring their goods to market!”

With this in mind SIBA and Biopac a leading environmentally responsible disposables company, have recently joined forces to produce a branded tumbler specifically for use by SIBA members. The tumbler is 100% compostable, biodegradable and sustainable, making it the product of the future. The tumblers are branded with the SIBA logo together with a statement stating the green credentials of the tumbler.

Biopac have worked with many companies in the past producing branded tumblers. Mark Brigden MD of Biopac says “It was a great experience working with SIBA, especially helping raise the profile of an important and influential organisation. We at Biopac feel that is worthwhile raising a Tumbler to!”

If you want to find out any more about the above contact SIBA on 0845 337 9158 or Biopac on 01386 555 777 alternatively go to www.siba.co.uk or www.biopac.co.uk.

SIBA DDS Technical Services

UPDATE – SIBA DDS Technical Services – more support to help you develop your business!

As you will be aware, Technical Services (TS) support is provided to pubs owned by national Pub Co’s in a number of different ways, ranging from a single contractor to a large number of individual brand owners.

SIBA DDS, on behalf of member brewers, has always taken a positive approach to its responsibilities in this area, and has recently taken a further important step.

From the beginning of December 2008, SIBA DDS has begun working with Innserve, the national TS contractor, and it is expected that a full contractual relationship will be established by the beginning of March 2009. Innserve was originally created from the merger of the Carlsberg and S&N technical services functions and now also numbers M&B and JD Wetherspoon among its clients.

Where Pub Cos require individual brewers to provide technical service support to their own brands, SIBA DDS is now in a position to deliver this on your behalf.

Initially this support will be restricted to maintenance and repair, but will develop to include installation of SIBA-owned equipment, in both DDS customers and member brewers’ free trade, in existing and the “Must Buy Must Sell” arrangement operated by the industry – more details to follow!

SIBA DDS is now beginning to accept calls from pubs belonging to Pub Co’s which use DDS requesting maintenance help with SIBA brewers’ products:

· Where the brand owner is responsible, SIBA DDS will refer the call to Innserve for resolution at our cost. This currently covers Admiral Taverns and about one-third of Enterprise pubs.

· Where the Pub Co has a separate TS arrangement, with either a contractor or a single brewer, then the call will be referred back to the pubco (Punch, Orchid, remaining Enterprise pubs) for action. SIBA DDS will continue to make a contribution to the Pub Co for the cost of technical services support.

Please keep an eye on the message board on your DDS Account ‘Log ON’ and the DDS section of the SIBA website for more information as things develop.
