Peerless Brew acclaimed as World Class Ale
An award winning brew from Wirral’s fast growing Peerless Brewing Company has been hailed a world beater.
The Peerless brew ‘Full Whack’ (6%abv) has made it to a top ranking in the latest international beer guide book from top beer expert and author Roger Protz. The newly released 300 More Beers To Try Before You Die is published by Camra (The Campaign for Real Ale) as a personal selection of beers from across the globe.
300 More Beers To Try Before You Die includes brews of all styles from the UK, Ireland, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, America, and Cuba. ‘Full Whack’ is the only entry from throughout Merseyside, Wirral and Cheshire and among a handful from the North West.
First brewed only in 2009, the premium strength ale was chosen following a visit to the four-year-old brewery in Pool Street, Birkenhead earlier this year. Full Whack – – is named after the ‘full whack’ rations demanded by Liverpool sailors during long sea voyages in the 1800s. Brewed with British First Gold and Fuggles hops and American Cascade in the strong India Pale Ale style of beer once shipped to the colonies, it scooped a silver award at the SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) Great Northern Beer Festival 2010.
The book – launched at the Great British Beer Festival last week – says: “The pale amber beer has a powerful aroma of spicy and floral hops, tart fruit and a ‘fresh bread malt note. Hop bitterness builds in the mouth but is well balanced by juicy malt and tangy fruit. The finish is long and ends dry and bitter but there are continuing contributions from honeyed malt and tart fruit.”
A delighted Peerless managing director Steve Briscoe said: “We have had a wonderful few years since start up and won several awards. But a place in an international guide from a world class beer authority is a great honour – a real tribute to the young brewing team. Many of the beers chosen by Roger are from brewers with long pedigrees, so we are very honoured to be included and expect it to further boost our growing business.”
To celebrate the recognition Peerless will give away beer with a special ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ offer on each case of Full Whack bought from the new brewery shop during August and September. In cask, it will be on the bar at a real ale festival at Hoylake Community Centre over the August Bank Holiday – with more than 60 cask beers on offer, along with ciders, wines, food and live music. The charity event, sponsored by Peerless, runs from Friday evening on August 23 until Sunday. Tickets are on sale at the Parade Community Centre, Peerless brewery or at www.hoylakebeerfestival.eventbrite.co.uk
