Seven Cumbria Breweries Taste Success in North West Awards
SEVEN Cumbria breweries have taken top awards in a regional beer competition held in the South Lakes.
Coniston, Hawkshead, Stringers of Ulverston, Barngates of Ambleside, Watermill, Keswick and Cumbrian Legendary Ales, picked up 16 awards between them out of the 39 on offer across 15 categories at the North West beer competition, staged in Staveley by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) North West Region.
They dominated the bottle beer categories with five golds, four silvers and four bronze in the six categories, beating off competition from approximately 200 beers entered into the competition.
The Overall Championship Ale was the Amarillo American Style Single Hop IPA by Brightside Brewery in Bury. This will progress to the SIBA National Beer Competition held at SIBA’s BeerX which takes place in Sheffield in March 2014.
Greg Bolton, SIBA North West chairman, said: “This, the first ever SIBA North West competition since the North region split into East and West, has proved a great success and I offer my congratulations to all of the award winners.
“More than 50 independent brewers entered almost 200 beers in this event, making it one of the biggest in the region, and certainly the most well supported by the brewers themselves.
