Locals Bring Brewery Back to Totnes
A group of beer-loving Totnesians is reviving what was once one of the town’s largest businesses, the Lion Brewery. The New Lion Brewery will celebrate its launch with a day-long mini beer festival at the Bay Horse Inn on Saturday 23 November.
The Lion Brewery, which made “the celebrated Totnes Stout”, once occupied a large section of South Street and owned many pubs in and around Totnes. Sadly, it closed in 1921. But this month it returns, as a ground-breaking craft brewery with the mission of combining innovative brewing with helping to drive the economic regeneration of Totnes.
Attendees of the launch will be able to join the brewery’s membership scheme, which will offer free beer tastings and other privileges, not least of which will be a first-in-line position when the brewery offers shares to the public sometime within the next few years.“I’m thrilled to be part of shaping and developing this new enterprise, ”Head Brewer Mat Henney says, “and building a membership of people who love beer.”
