Firkins and film at full moon: Goody Ales to host Medieval Re-enactment group at Bleangate Brewery
• Local brewery to host Medieval Siege Society for weekend
• Fun will start on the evening of the full moon,
• Hog roast and real ales served
• Living history, crafts, demonstrations and ‘have a go’ archery
Local beer producer Goody Ales is to host its first Medieval Weekend
in the brewery grounds. As part of its Firkins at Full Moon events the Medieval Siege Society will be setting up camp on Friday 13th June and the fun will continue throughout the weekend.
The visitors are a group of re-enactors and living history enthusiasts of all ages who will re-enact the conflicts & campaign life of the high medieval period. At Bleangate Brewery, Herne, the past will be brought to life with exciting and entertaining battles, sieges, displays and living history encampments.
At the event dubbed Firkins and Film at Full Moon Medieval Weekend, a hog roast will be served along with real ales with the brewery’s location near the ancient West Blean woods on Bragg’s Lane providing an atmospheric backdrop.
However this is perhaps the first time a re-enactment group have set camp at a brewery, and if successful the family-run brewery hopes to make it the first of an annual event.
Brewster Karen Goody is delighted with the success of the previous events at the brewery and likes the idea of offering a variety of events that work in harmony with the local environment. “Herne is a medieval village and the large ancient woodland that surround us are an ideal setting for medieval re-enactment.” She added, “We will be serving a range of real ales including ‘Genesis’, our double award winning brew. We hope to have a good turnout and if it goes well we will repeat the event again with even more activities.”
The brewery will be open from 6pm on Friday 13th June, when the Medieval Siege Society will be setting up camp. Living history, demonstrations and ‘have a go’ archery will begin on Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 10am – 5pm. Entry is free.
