Robinsons Brewery take to the sea in aid of charity
A team from Robinsons Brewery, Stockport, is set to row across the Welsh Menai Straits to raise much needed funds for the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team.
The ‘Great Strait Raft Run’, which takes place on Sunday 1st June, will see the seven strong team, captained by Business Development Manager John Hughes, attempt to cross one of the most difficult sailing straits in the world on a makeshift raft.
John Hughes said: “The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team is a completely voluntary organisation who goes out in all weathers to assist and rescue visitors to the area who have become lost or distressed. It’s a fantastic service that has helped hundreds of people and Robinsons are proud to support such a worthy cause.”
The raft race has seen thousands flock each year to battle through the strong currents against the picturesque backdrop of Snowdonia’s mountains. Starting at the old slate port of Felinheli, the team will head north east for approximately 6 miles, through ‘The Swellies’ made famous by Admiral Lord Nelson who rated it as one of the most difficult sailing straights in the world to navigate, before ending at the iconic Menai Bridge.
“We have a number of fantastic pubs in North Wales” said John, “many of which are also taking part in this year’s Great Strait Raft Run; including The Bulkeley Arms, The California, The Benllech and The Gazelle. The rescue team has its headquarters next to one of our pubs, The Vaynol in Nant Peris, so it’s certainly an organisation that is near and dear to our hearts. We hope we can do them proud! We would like to extend an invitation to everyone to come down and support all of the teams entering the race this year; it’s safe to say that everybody will have deserved a pint at the end of it!”
