UK Hops triumph in the Great Truman’s Taste Test
Truman’s Eyrie joins brewer’s permanent range
A beer brewed exclusively with British-grown hops has triumphed over its US counterpart in the largest ever co-creation trial in the UK ale category.
The Great Truman’s Taste Test, run in conjunction with Nicholson’s pubs, saw two competing beers put on the bar – UK Gold and US Pale. Drinkers were invited to give their feedback on the two brews and vote for their favourite.
Truman’s – the legendary East London brewery re-born in Hackney Wick last summer, after a 24 year absence from London’s pubs – brewed each beer three times, with the recipes improved and refined according to drinkers’ feedback.
More than a thousand Nicholson’s customers participated – with UK Gold beating off its counterpart by 54% to 46%.
“We are absolutely delighted with the results of the Great Truman’s Taste Test. It was truly gratifying to see all the votes and suggestions flood in. This is a beer that has been crafted by our drinkers and the winning beer is an absolute belter,” commented James Morgan, Managing Director of Truman’s.
UK Gold has been renamed in honour of our new brewery in Hackney Wick – The Eyrie (“ear-ree”) the term for an eagle’s nest. Truman’s Eyrie will be the third permanent member of the Truman’s range, joining Truman’s Runner and Truman’s Swift.
Brewed with four hop varieties – Bramling Cross, Admiral, First Gold and Target – Truman’s Eyrie is a zesty and vibrant golden ale that showcases the power and glory of British hops. “We love US hops – we use lots in our beers – but it was great to see the UK varieties triumph. They often get overlooked when at their best they are world beaters,” added Morgan.
Truman’s Eyrie will be available exclusively in Mitchells & Butlers pubs (Nicholson’s, Castle and Ember Inns) across the country from June. Eyrie will be available to the wider trade from September.
