Treacle Town Pie Company is 'Pick of the Litter' with signature Old Tom pie.
A local pie maker from Macclesfield has received a gold award for his Steak and Old Tom Ale pie in the Beef and Ale class at the recent 6th annual British pie awards.
The winning pie by Mark Wilkinson, owner of the Treacle Town Pie Company, fought off stiff competition from 825 entries to rise to the top of his category in the annual event hosted by the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association.
The pies, submitted in 19 classes, underwent a stringent judging process by over 100 food experts and critics including Charles Campion, food writer Xanthe Clay and TV Chefs Rachel Green and Andy Bates.
Judged not only on its taste but by its appearance and texture, it was Mark who swiped the top prize from the competition.
“Winning the award is the pie equivalent of getting a Michelin star” exclaimed Mark Wilkinson. “It really is great to receive such an accolade. We only source fresh local ingredients and it’s great that our local brewery’s best ale has been become a match made in heaven our pies.”
The legendary ale, created by Robinsons Brewery in neighbouring Stockport, was first brewed in 1899 and named after the old brewery cat. The superior dark brew has since grown to international fame by winning some of the brewing industry’s most prestigious awards including World’s Best Ale in 2009.
“We start every morning at 4am,” said Mark, “so this award is not only an acknowledgment of our hard work but the passion that goes into carefully crafting each pie that we create.”
Matthew O’Callaghan, Chairman of Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association said: “Our aim is to recognise the hard work, skill and passion of the nation’s pie makers and the judging panel were bowled over by the standard of this year’s entries. Together, all the entrants have shown that there is nothing humble about the British pie.”
