The Foundry Vaults re-opens following brewery investment.
The Foundry Vaults pub in Llangefni, Anglesey, has been reborn following a joint investment from Robinsons Brewery and licensee Derek McKeon.
The popular High Street hostelry welcomed back regulars following a refurbishment period that saw the Robinsons tavern closed for just over 3 weeks.
The bar was established in 1819 and the brewery’s design team, headed by designer Glenn Doyle, looked to emphasise the original Georgian structural features in the refurbishment.
“I was surprised at the scale of the site” said Glenn. “The triple height ceilings and roof rafters on display instantly drew my eye and captured my imagination. I knew straight away that the new design should accentuate these original features.”
Glenn worked hand-in-hand with Derek throughout the process to ensure that the new look would not impact on the great atmosphere that has become synonymous with the pub.
“The pub has always had character” said Derek. “It’s what our customers love about the place and I wanted to be quite hands on with the design team to make sure we didn’t lose the charm of the building.”
The new design uses a palette of creams, dark browns and green tartan to create a sleek and contemporary style against the back drop of the buildings historical features. An eclectic selection of antiques adorn the walls including a rustic carpentry tool draw which creates a striking focal point.
The former lobby entrance had outgrown its walls and wasn’t offering the ‘wow’ factor welcome that the Foundry Vaults commands. The once restrictive lobby has now been completely removed to reveal the airy vaulted ceiling on entrance. The rear courtyard has also been brought to life with festoon lighting and box hedge plants, creating the perfect sun trap during the summer.
“One of the biggest changes is the movement of the bar towards the kitchen” said Glenn. “Derek felt very passionate about creating a food menu for the Foundry Vaults and the movement of the bar was a necessity in accomplishing this.”
“I always felt that the one thing that would complete the Foundry Vaults was an excellent food menu” said Derek. “We can now do this and will be offering a varied menu of pizzas, traditional Welsh cuisine and mouth-watering modern American BBQ favourites. There really is something for everyone!”
The bar has been redesigned to represent a vintage drawing cabinet whilst the new back bar features a quasi-industrial shelving unit created from reused metal pipework and thick timber planks. The design has proven a hit with regulars of the pub who flocked in numbers for the grand opening.
“Our opening weekend has been incredible” said Derek. “Our customers have been absolutely blown away by the new look and our new menu has received a lot of praise – something I am particularly proud of as the Foundry Vaults have never served food before. We cannot praise the professionalism of the Robinsons team enough, everyone worked around the clock to get the pub ready and I couldn’t be happier with the final result.”
“Derek and the team have been a pleasure to work with” said Glenn. “It’s always great to have such a hands-on licensee and you can really see the passion that Derek has for the place. I know this will be the start of many good things to come for this much loved pub.”
