Hawkshead Brewery Joins Leading Craft Breweries at International Festival
Hawkshead Brewery was one of five UK breweries to be featured at Norwegian innovative craft beer festival What’s Brewing. The two day festival in the south-west coastal town of Stavanger, better known as the ‘oil capital’ in Norway, was host to 28 European and American craft breweries.
Hawkshead exhibited 8 beers including one-offs Wild Wheat (a wild yeast fermented wheat beer), Oat Wine (an 8.8% beer aged in cider brandy casks) and Green Juniper & Hemp Double IPA (brewed as part of an international collaboration project).
Hawkshead’s Matt Clarke and Ben Ray, alongside volunteers, staffed the brewery bar for the duration of the festival which was held at the town’s old Pilsner brewery, Tou Scene. The 218-strong beer list represented breweries from 9 countries and included the likes of Nøgne (Norway), Mikkeller (Denmark), Birra Del Borgo (Italy), Brouwerji De Molen (Netherlands) and Evil Twin (USA). Representing the UK alongside Hawkshead were fellow craft brewers Beavertown, Buxton, Magic Rock and Siren.
Strict Norwegian alcohol laws prevented the festival from ‘advertising’ the beer list, however word of mouth on social media meant it was a sell-out. Over 2000 people attended the event and all tickets available on the door were snapped up quickly.
