Burnout began life as a collaboration brew with the York University Real Ale Society (@yorkunirealale). The first recipe used peat-smoked malt. We worked on a recipe that the Society had prepared and the resulting beer went on to win its category (and place second overall) at the York CAMRA festival (@YorkCAMRA, @beerfestyork) in 2012. We’ve since improved the beer by using beech-smoked malt in place of peat-smoked. And the result is the Burnout porter that we brew today.
All our beers are vegetarian/vegan-friendly and Burnout is no exception. We don’t use isinglass finings in our cask beers – relying instead on the fantastic clarifying properties of our own ‘traditional Yorkshire top-cropper’ house yeast. Most of what we do as brewers is simply about keeping that yeast happy!
The same yeast is found across our range – with the exception of our lagers or Belgian-style beers. It’s what helps to balance a hefty 100 IBUs in our bottled Sunshine IPA.
The brewery is smack bang in the centre of Malton town. Malton has styled itself as Yorkshire’s Food Capital (@welovemalton) and was once a brewing powerhouse. So, as you can imagine, the town is thrilled to host a champion beer! The brewery doors are aways open and locals just walk in off the street to have a natter. It certainly contributes to a unique character in our beers.
Big Job is a big beer, 7.2%, dry as a bone and jammed full with as many Citra and Centennial hops as we could get our hands on. Also contains Nugget and Cascade hops so 100% USA hops. Made with Cornish grown, Maris Otter barley. Heavily ‘dry hopped’ in conditioning tanks too to produce a warming, crisp and resinous citrus taste but still refreshing.
Big Job can be spotted occasionally spotted on cask or keg(mainly Export) but hopefully the cask side will become increasingly more available due to the installation of a new 10 brewers barrel small batch brewery at our main St. Austell site. This will enable more creative brews to become more available in the future, as well as giving our brewers the chance to have a play and develop new beers, whilst continuing the growth of Tribute, Proper Job and Korev on the main plant. Watch out later in the year for some special bottled beers too.
Madnes IPA – When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.
Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.
