Dartmoor Brewery scoops SIBA’s UK Speciality Beer award
Actor and brewer, Neil Morrissey presents Dartmoor Brewery’s head brewer, Mike Lunney with the Gold award for UK Champion Speciality Beer at the National Beer Competition.
Three Hares (4.4%) won the prestigious Gold award in the Champion Speciality Beers category. Produced by blending the Brewery’s popular Legend ale with heather and flower honey sourced only from Dartmoor, Three Hares was created to showcase Dartmoor ingredients. This award winning Three Hares also uses Dartmoor water and malted barley, grown specifically for the Brewery on the moor, which combine to give the beer its rich spicy taste of Dartmoor heather honey and a hint of apricots.
The Princetown- based brewery famous for their Jail Ale, confirm they will continue to make Three Hares available as a special beer for festivals and special events, Dartmoor Brewery head brewer Mike Lunney explains:
“It is tremendous recognition for our Three Hares to be crowned the UK’s Champion Speciality Beer. We believe the secret of its success is the wonderfully intense and balanced honey produced on the moor that gives it that distinctive Dartmoor flavour. Despite a strong demand for Three Hares there is such limited availability of this special honey, we have to ‘treasure’ the valuable amber nectar, and are only able to produce Three Hares as a special for festivals.“
Three Hares went through to the SIBA national final, following its success at the regional competition hosted at the Tucker’s Maltings Beer Festival. Judged by a panel of brewers, industry experts, local licensees and beer enthusiasts, Three Hares saw off competition from around 150 other entrants across the UK to take the prestigious gold award.
The award winning brewery uses traditional brewing techniques to create its premium quality cask conditioned real ale.
