Great Newsome Brewery use Twitter to take the Hull Beer Festival to the nation
East Yorkshire brewery Great Newsome are set to promote this year’s Hull Beer and Cider Festival to the whole of the UK by sponsoring a group of the country’s top tweeters to live tweet from the event.
Twitter users from as far away as London, Sunderland, Leeds and Scarborough will be joining social networkers from Hull to taste the beers and tell their followers all about them during festival, which takes place between Thursday and Saturday this week at Hull’s Holy Trinity church.
The 7 tweeters, who have over 25,000 followers between them, will sample beers and give their notes via the social network using the hashtag #HullBeerFest. The event is the idea of local food writer and film-maker Dave Lee, who also organises the very popular Eat & Tweet events, where tweeters meet to review restaurants in the riding.
Dave says: ‘As far as we know this is the first time something like this has been attempted at a beer festival. We’ll be trying to taste every beer and cider available and give our opinion of each. As there are almost 200 different drinks available it should be quite a task, but I think we have the right team to handle the job!’
Matthew Hodgson of Great Newsome Brewery added: ‘Twitter is playing an increasingly important part in the promotion of craft beers and there are people who tweet from other festivals, but I haven’t heard of anything as organised or ambitious as this. We’ve brought all of these tweeters together to not only promote our beers but all the beers at the festival and, indeed, to promote Hull as a great destination for a good night out. The recent Purple Flag award the city centre won shows that Hull is one of the best and safest places to go for a drink and we want as many people to know how good the city is.’
