Shropshire brewer’s local beers cheer ale fans
A taste of home is giving some big name beers a run for their money at two favourite watering holes in the south of the county.
Norman Pearce, who is the landlord at the Sun Inn in Corfton, near Craven Arms, has been brewing behind the pub for 15 years.
But he has just dreamt up two new beers using ingredients sourced from close to home – in one case from just outside the pub itself.
New for this year, he has produced Fuggles Gold from hops grown near Tenbury Wells, on the Shropshire border, and Oatmeal Stout, made from oats grown by Steven Poval of Corfton Farm, right next to his own premises.
He said: “The Oatmeal Stout uses oats from the farmland around me. They’re exactly the same oats that they give to the cattle.
“It has now replaced a well-known Irish stout – we’ve been doing a lot of trial tastes with customers and they all agree I should keep it on and not use the well-known brand – it’s helping local farming,” he said.
