Scottish Brewery honours Glasgow 2014 with Commonwealth Gold

The award winning Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh has released details of the special limited edition ale it will brew this summer to commemorate the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The limited edition ale, brewed under an agreement with the Organising Committee, will be named Commonwealth Gold. It will be brewed with ingredients from around the Commonwealth including hops from Australia, England and New Zealand together with malt from local Scottish suppliers.
According to Caledonian’s Beer Specialist Craig Steven, the result will be “a golden ale with a citric soft fruit aroma and flavour followed by a lemon and soft malt finish”.
Commonwealth Gold will be made available to customers as a guest ale option in the run up to, and during the Games fortnight. Official Glasgow 2014 beer & cider provider, HEINEKEN, will ensure that the special beer gets a wide distribution across the UK.
The Caledonian, locally known as “The Caley”, is Edinburgh’s oldest Brewery, established in 1869 – more than 50 years before the modern Commonwealth was founded. Managing Director Andy Maddock commented “we’re excited and honoured to be brewing Commonwealth Gold, so that pubs and beer drinkers across the UK can share in the celebration and excitement of the Games. It will be brewed using our open-fired coppers that date back to the Victorian age, so visitors to the Games will be able to enjoy a refreshing golden beer that combines ingredients from all over the Commonwealth, brought together according to the very best traditions of Scottish brewing.”
The Caley also has plans to use a mobile bar/s in Glasgow over the games period to showcase its range of popular cask ales.
Brewing of Commonwealth Gold will commence on the 20th June and will be available to pubs from mid July.
