Muntons announce the release of new Super Pale Ale malt
Pale Beers Demand the Palest Malt
In July 2013 Jim Wilson, previously at Tap East in London and now Head Brewer at the Laine Pub Company, was brewing as part of a London Brewers Alliance visit to the Muntons Pilot brewery and over lunch he remarked ‘What new malts are coming through andcan’t you make something that is exceptionally pale but with body and can hold a decent hop?’
As Jim takes up the story ‘I never thought I’d be saying I came up with a new malt style. It really was just a fleeting idea, the kind I’m sure all brewers have. I had this idea in my head of brewing a champagne coloured beer, something so light yet full of flavour, something to try and catch the drinker off guard.’
As we all know in the Craft sector beer and brewing are undergoing a seismic shift right now and brewers are being extremely inventive thinking about new things to do, new ways of doing things in the process or new ingredients to add. ‘Whilst we see new varieties of hops coming out almost annually and there are numerous yeast varieties out there, you never really see new malt styles coming out and I thought that a broader range of malt was needed’ continued Jim. He added ‘Muntons were kind enough to send me the first batch from a trial run and I now look forward to brewing with it at the breweries I’m running in London for Laine Pub Company at the People’s Park Tavern in Hackney and The Aeronaut in Acton’.
While creating that very low colour in the malt is a technical challenge in itself it is one that our malt team responded to and in late 2013 we produced the first trial batches. Graham Sutton and Gary Chittock at Muntons Centre for Excellence led the production and regional craft brewers were encouraged to take part in commercial trials. ‘We approached a dozen of our craft customers in the first instance and asked if they would be prepared to assist us in our development of the super pale malt’ said Muntons Craft Brewery sales representative, Stuart Robson, ‘and after some initial adjustments the results across breweries of differing size and style have been excellent’.
Following the success of the trials we are now launching to the UK craft brewer our Super Pale Malt.
Coming in at an EBC Wort colour of two, or lower, on a 515ml mash, this new malt is well placed to ensure that for some craft beers the future is exceptionally pale.
If you would like to find out more about this great new malt, or any from our range for the craft brewer, please contact your local representative.
