A YouGov poll found that 33 per cent of UK adults want the Government to cut beer duty to “make going out to the pub more affordable”.
By contrast, only 23 per cent think ministers should bring down the level of income tax – even though it would give them more take-home pay.
More than half – 54 per cent – also said the Government should reduce the taxes paid by landlords “to help prevent pub closures”.
Campaigners last night said the results confirmed ordinary Brits’ enduring love affair with a cold pint at the end of a hard day.
The Sun successfully campaigned for the Government to axe the hated beer duty escalator, which guaranteed the price of a pint would go up by more than inflation every year.
Chancellor George Osborne followed that up in this year’s Budget by cutting beer duty by 1p and scrapping a 1p inflation rise.
Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, said: “With beer tax cuts the most popular, there is huge support to help Britain’s favourite drink and our much-loved pubs.
“And it shows that The Sun’s successful campaigns to cut beer duty have been right on the mark with the British public.”‘
