Local Brewery and MP Launch Special Beer to Commemorate Ww1 Centenary
Barnsley Central MP and Labour Party Lead on World War One, Dan Jarvis, has joined forces with Barnsley’s Two Roses Brewery to create a special beer to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War One and the particular contribution of the Barnsley Pals.
The ‘Barnsley Pals Ale’ was launched with the help of members of Barnsley’s Royal British Legion, at the Two Roses Brewery in Darton. They helped start off the first batch, which is now already being sold in local pubs. Five pence from the sale of each pint will be donated to the Barnsley Group of the Barnsley Royal British Legion.
The Barnsley Pals formed the 13th and 14th Battalions of the York and Lancaster Regiment during the war and they were composed of men who had enlisted in local recruitment drives on the promise of being able to serve with their friends and colleagues, rather than in regular army regiments. Both Barnsley Pals regiments were part of the attack on Serre on the first day of the Somme campaign. In that one day, 1 July 1916, the 1st Barnsley Pals lost 275 men, while the 2nd lost 270.
Dan Jarvis said:
“The true impact of the First World War can be understood when we think of the families that lost loved ones that day – the countless husbands, fathers and sons who never came home, and the irreplaceable loss suffered by those families and communities.
“With the 100 year anniversary of the war fast approaching, it seems fitting that a local business should pay tribute to Barnsley’s contribution to the war effort in this way. I am particularly pleased that the beer will provide a charitable donation for the Barnsley Group of the Royal British Legion – who carry out important work supporting our local veterans. The Barnsley Pals ale will no doubt be drunk across the town at a time when we will all be reflecting on the sacrifices made by Barnsley people – both then and to this very day”
