Award Winning Historic Highgate Dark Mild Relaunched a true taste of history
Highgate Dark Mild the multi-award winning mild beer and part of the history of Walsall has a new lease of life after 116 years. I’ts now being relaunched using the original 100 year old recipe benefiting from a small batch, craft brewing process.
Highgate Brewery was established in 1899 with “mild” style beer, a staple for the workers of the local area, at its peak in the 1980’s 100,000 barrels of mild beer per year, were being produced.
Production stopped in 2010 at the Brewery in Sandymount Rd and since then the Highgate Beers have been brewed by various contract brewers.
Highgate Dark Mild is currently being brewed in the Black Country in a new modern state of the art small batch brewery. Highgate beers will be brewed in a ‘craft brewery ‘ style with a focus on quality rather than quantity but still using the original 100 year old recipe until plans can be realised for a new craft brewery in Walsall in the near future.
A key part of the renaissance in the Highgate and Davenports beers has been Executive Brewer Paul Buttrick, a Fellow of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling, a Qualified Master Brewer with over 40 years brewing experience and a former head brewer at Boddingtons of Manchester.
Paul has advised on the implementation to the smaller batch craft process resulting in a simpler more natural brewing process with less additives compared to larger volume beers. The link to the past goes beyond just the original recipe with the Head Brewer Paran Sandhu, who boasts 20 years’ experience brewing Highgate beers.

Highgate Dark Mild is available in the traditional Cask form and in keg both use the same original 100 year old recipe and natural ingredients, with the keg variant offering a thicker creamy head.
