Purity beers Lawless Lager and Pure UBU crowned best in UK
Purity Brewing Company is celebrating yet again after Lawless Lager and Pure UBU were crowned national winners in their categories at the prestigious 2015 World Beer Awards.
Following up on the success of the brewery being named Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year, Pure UBU has been recognised as the UKs best Amber Ale, whilst Lawless Lager has been named UK’s best German-style Lager.
The beers now have the potential to be crowned best in Europe when the awards move to the continental judging in September.
Purity MD, Paul Halsey, comments: “To some, the World Beer Awards are the holy grail of brewing recognition. For Purity to pick up two national crowns is testament to our unfaltering commitment to upholding our core values; to brew great beer without prejudice, with a conscience and with a consistency and an attention to detail, which is second to none. We say roll on Europe!”

The winners – UBU and Lawless
UBU, Purity’s first and most popular beer, was born after two aspiring and intrepid brewers began Purity Brewery Company in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside a decade ago. At that time, they could not have foreseen the single biggest challenge that would face them.
The challenge wasn’t setting a brewery up from scratch, nor was it the trek through driving rain and wind to the brewery’s farm location; it wasn’t even coming in to brew the beer at 2 o’clock in the morning, it was a much much bigger challenge than that! The challenge was Tess, the farm dog. Whether cunningly picking spots in the shadows to be tripped over or lying in the road unmoving to prevent the dray passing, Tess was the ultimate pain in the backside.
However, Tess was greatly loved, so never was an angry word uttered against her. In time, the dozy dog became the protector of Purity’s secrets and bore a heartfelt and sentimental three word nickname – Useless Bloody Urchin. And so it was that Pure UBU, the UKs best Premium Amber Ale was named.
And following in UBU’s footsteps a few years later came Lawless, Purity’s maverick brew, which follows the 500-year-old Bavarian brewing law to achieve traditional purity using only four ingredients.
Purity then adds an idiosyncratic twist of its own, creating a blend of Hallertau, Eldorado and Styrian Goldings hops. With Pilsner Malt, Wheat Malt, Caragold, lager yeast and the brewery’s own mineral rich local water, Lawless is then coolly lagered for 40 days before the brewers slip in a dash of hops whilst no one is looking for a sharp, citrusy kick. Purity takes the classic pilsner rules and then applies Flo’s Law, the law of its renegade brewer, to take this lagered beer to a whole new level.
